Why Prince Harry should be king

There are just some downright strange things that you can come across in the news sometimes.

Like this, for example: Prince Harry visits Calgary cowboy bar

I nearly fell off my chair when I read that.

I mean, come on, this is the third in line for the throne. Given, he might never actually sit on the thing, but he’s still a Windsor and expected to behave as such. So I have to say it’s really refreshing to hear that he’s acting … well, just like the rest of us.

Well, almost like the rest of us. Some of us wouldn’t be caught dead in Cowboys. (I’ve been in Calgary seven years now, and am happy to have avoided it thus far.)

Given, he had plainclothes RCMP officers with him at the time. But he didn’t choose a private area, he didn’t ask for special favours, and he freely mingled with everyone else. And he went there on ladies night — you gotta love that!

Prince Charles: okay guy, good taste in architecture and community development. Not exactly the most princely of behaviour (the whole Camilla thing is … well, weird), and I’m having difficulty seeing him as a king.

Prince William: this guy I can see as king. But he does seem, well, a little stodgy. Stick-in-the-mudish. Probably because he’s the first born and expected to play the exact role of king-to-be.

This is why I think Harry should be king. He’s out there, knowing what it’s like to be Joe Shmuck. Not that it really matters (given the limited powers the Royal Family actually has these days), but when you consider the impression the Royal Family often delivers of being staid and standoff-ish, it can’t be all bad, right?

  1. You complain that Prince William is a snob but you diss a club without ever going there? Weak article.

  2. Given that Cowboys has “Through these doors walk the most beautiful women in Alberta”, and is known for giving some of their female waitstaff breast enlargements, I believe I’m more than capable of dissing without the need to actually subject myself to the place.

And speaking of weak, comparing myself to Prince William — though cool — is just a bit of a stretch.

  3. Harry is third in the line to the throne of England. His antics have always been somewhat doubtful as regards their ‘regality’, and his dating of a South African heir to a big game hunter’s empire didn’t help in many circles (you need to read the Davy family history to appreciate the piratical nature – no, I don’t find piracy romantic – you might – your call). His heavy partying is an accepted factor in the royal household, and his lack of concern in the light of his inherited public image is obvious.

Cowboys may be a great ‘night-spot’, it may boast gorgeous women, it may have a great DJ and a wait-list, but it is no spotlight in high society, and it is no place for a possible future King of the Realm to be. The fact that he was there was bad enough. the fact that he kissed an unknown waitress, worse (one assumes he is supposed to be setting some kind of example, and kissing a vaguely attractive waitress in Cowboys might not be one that even your manager would aspire to as a claim to fame).

The fact that said waitress went and sold her story attests to the nature of the waitress in question. Add that to the huge money spinning that cowboys is making out of the story, and her willingnes to participate – this is no love story – this is pure and utter gold-digging, and I doubt Harry is pleased or proud of the associated publicity, not to mention his significant PR machine.

I, personally, am delighted that Harry is NOT next in line to throne, assuming one’s view point requires or expects some measure of decorum as regards what is left of the British crown as the last bastion of true royalty in the world in the 21st century. Royalty is not supposed to mix below their class – ancient perhaps, but necessary as regards class distinction – which if you are a socialist you will poo-poo – your choice – but communism doesn’t work and socialism destroys everyone but the elite (ironic) and the lowest class, and the majority of the upper class of England would not be caught dead in Cowboys. And England is not Canaada. Don’t even try to compare class expectations or government if you haven’t lived in either for at least 5 years.

Harry’s position is shielded from some of the backlash due to his brother’s support, which in the UK is significant, and is increasing as it becomes obvious that Elizabeth will be passing the crown directly to him.

I don’t know too many peple from the Pete club who go to Cowboys… Do you?

  4. For the record, my post was mostly sarcasm. I freely admit that Harry’s past is … um … interesting. Frankly, I’m not sure that having any Royals is little more than a novelty and something to put on the backs of our money.

By the way, what’s the Pete club?

PS – Nice try. Y’ain’t getting a free piggy back on Yoshirolla from me. 😛

  5. I know it was mostly sarcasm :), but it was too good an opportunity to pass up on the off chance I might get away with it 😉

P.S. and … rats… I have to ferrett around elsewhere (no pun intended)
